Marble torso and head of a statue of Asclepios in the type Este
From the Asclepieion of Piraeus. 2nd c. BC.
(ΕΑΜ/ΝΑΜ Γ 258)
Hellenistic variation of the original cult statue attributed to the sculptor Skopas (first half of the 4th c. BC.). The nude body is marked by an antithetical movement and a detailed but soft rendering of the musculature. The turning of the head, the big inlaid eyes, the rough curls of the hair and beard, the half open mouth express restrained passion.
