Marble torso of a statue of Aphrodite in the Arles type
From Athens. 1st c. BC. Copy of the “Aphrodite of Thespies” by Praxiteles (around 360 BC.).
(ΕΑΜ/ΝΑΜ Γ 227)
The goddess was depicted half naked, with a bracelet around the arm, looking at the mirror that she held in the left hand, while she stretched the right hand towards the statue of the famous courtesan Phryne. The smooth skin and the soft, sensual rendering of the flesh emphasize the femininity of the figure.
